Dream Horse is the kind of movie where you can hear the keys of the keyboard typing during every line of dialogue. You can leave to go to the bathroom at any point and easily guess what you missed during those few minutes. When the film does attempt to move you to tears or to lift your spirits, it feels contrived and sacchrine, and tries too hard to tell you how to feel. Why not trust the audience's emotions more? That said, the horce racing scenes are exciting to watch and provide the film with much-needed suspense.

But while there's nothing remarkable about this movie from director and screenwriter。 it's almost impossible to dislike. And there's something to be said for seeing the story beats of machine-tooled, feel-good storytelling. It's also a treat to see Toni Collette and Damian Lewis, whose careers recently by emotionally disturbed Americans in grim, relentless tales, cast as the sorts of people that you might run into at the store or on the city bus, and whose extraordinary stories you'd never know unless you decided to strike up a conversation with them.
