Theyoungboy,namedJi-hoon,growsupinasmallvillageinNorthKorea.Heliveswithhisparents,hisuncleSun-cheol,andhisuncleGil-jun.Ji-hoon'sfamilyisknownfortheirintellectualpursuitsandanti-communistbeliefs,whichmakesthematargetfortheNorthKoreanarmy.WhentheKoreanWarbreaksout,theNorthKoreanarmytakescontrolofthevillage.Ji-hoon'suncleSun-cheoldecidestojointheCommunistpartyinordertoprotecthisfamily,butsecretly,hestillholdsontohisanti-communistbeliefs.Hehopesthatbybeingapartoftheparty,hecanensurethesafetyofhislovedones.Asthewarrageson,Ji-hoon'sfamilyfacesconstantdangeranduncertainty.TheywitnesstheatrocitiescommittedbytheNorthKoreanarmy,andJi-hoon'sparentsanduncleGil-junbecomemoredeterminedtoresistthecommunistregime.TheyjoinaresistancegroupandworktounderminetheNorthKoreanforcesinanywaytheycan.Meanwhile,Ji-hoon'suncleSun-cheolistornbetweenhisloyaltytohisfamilyandhisallegiancetotheCommunistparty.Hetriestoprotecthisin-lawsbyprovidingthemwithinformationandwarningthemofanyimpendingdanger.However,asthewarprogresses,Sun-cheol'strueloyaltiesaretested,andheisforcedtomakedifficultchoicesthatputhimatoddswithhisownfamily.Eventually,thetidesofthewarturn,andSouthKoreantroopsdriveouttheNorthKoreanarmyfromthevillage.Ji-hoon'sfamilyrejoicesattheliberation,buttheirjoyisshort-lived.Thedivisionbetweenthefamilymembersbecomesevenmorepronouncedastheyareforcedtoconfrontthebitterrealityoftheirconflictingloyalties.Ji-hoon'sparentsanduncleGil-junarehailedasheroesfortheirresistanceefforts,whilehisuncleSun-cheolisviewedasatraitorbymanyinthevillage.Thefamilyistornapart,withdeep-seatedresentmentandangersimmeringbeneaththesurface.AsJi-hoongrowsolder,hestrugglestomakesenseofthewaranditsaftermath.Hegrappleswithquestionsofloyalty,betrayal,andthecomplexnatureoffamilyties.Ultimately,helearnsthattheKoreanWarhasleftalastingimpactonnotonlyhisfamilybutalsoontheentirenation,andthathealingandreconciliationwilltaketimeandeffortfromallsides.
